GDC Learning Outcome C
Course Aim:
To equip dental professionals with the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills required to achieve efficient, consistent, and high-quality rubber dam isolation across a wide range of clinical scenarios, using both basic and advanced techniques.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Knowledge & Communication
• Understand the biological and clinical importance of effective moisture control.
• Identify the full range of benefits of rubber dam use for both patient and clinician.
• Develop confident communication strategies to explain rubber dam use to patients and gain their consent and cooperation.
Equipment Mastery
• Recognise and appropriately select rubber dam components including clamps, frames, forceps, punches, wedges, ligatures, and accessories. Learn the less is more clamp selection approach.
• Understand how to use adjuncts such as floss ties, PTFE tape, and inversion techniques for enhanced isolation and moisture control
Application Skills
• Perform predictable and efficient rubber dam placement using ergonomic techniques in collaboration with a dental nurse.
• Accurately position and size holes for single- and multi-tooth isolation ; learn how to use the VTD template for predictable hole control every time.
• Wedgets vs “Home-made” RD WEDGETS
Clinical Scenarios
BASIC
• Isolate effectively in the following restorative scenarios:
• Posterior quadrant isolation on unprepared teeth
• Full arch* and anterior clampless isolation using ligatures
LEARN and WORK in pairs to understand the ergonomics behind isolation – how to take advantage of your assistant to make isolation simpler, quicker and more comfortable for clinician and patient.
COMPLEX
• Terminal tooth (e.g. distal of lower 7s) isolation – how to matrix – what options are there and case management
• Deep margin isolation using copper bands and other methods
• Split dam isolation for complex or compromised dentitions
• Isolation for direct restorative procedures with correct matrixing, wedge placement, and PTFE use
• Isolation for indirect restorations including crowns, veneers, and non-retentive overlays
• Veneer cementation and hands on cementation try in simulation with PMMA veneer
• Class V / NCL isolation with tacking techniques
Photography & Documentation (BONUS CHAPTER)
• How to specifically make your rubber dam photography POP!
Hands-On Competence
• Confidently execute all hands-on techniques using anatomically realistic phantom heads designed to simulate clinical conditions.
• Troubleshoot common isolation issues through practical tips and tricks demonstrated and supervised by Dr Wiktor.
Post-Course Integration
• Take home a comprehensive PUNCH KIT including all essential tools for immediate clinical implementation.
• Access ongoing learning through a private online portal containing video tutorials and technique refreshers , downloadable PDFs and much more.
• Receive post-course support via a dedicated WhatsApp group to troubleshoot restorative cases and share progress. Dr Wik on instagram @drvicthedentist
